The Ionians have become immensely popular
for safe and easy cruising in these delightful and luxuriant Greek islands.
Most of the sailing is in sheltered waters between the islands and mainland
coast. Distances between one anchorage or port and the next are rarely more
than a few miles so you can sail as little or as far as you wish each day
whilst the variety of scenery makes interesting exploring for adults and
children alike.
Navigation requires little more than common sense with no
tides, currents or other hazards to contend with. There are good sailing
breezes in the late morning through the afternoon. Free from the stronger
Meltemi winds of the Aegean, the winds of the Ionians rarely exceed 5 Beaufort
and provide superb sailing.
Winter rains keep the islands fresh and green
but between late April and early October there is very little rainfall and
almost constant sunshine. The sea is warm, crystal clear and unpolluted.
For those who just want to sail lazily in the sun, the islands of Lefkada
(Nydri), Corfu, Paxos and Anti-Paxos and the mainland coast from Sayiadha to
Parga offer everything for an excellent one week sailing holiday.
